A Eulogy for Community

So, in case you haven't heard the news yet for some reason, Community was cancelled last Friday. When I first heard the news, I didn't really have a huge reaction. Community had been on the bubble for so long, and this most recent season was a little too hit or miss for me to feel indignant about the cancellation. And with Donald Glover departing anyway, it kinda felt like it was time. And yet, when I sat down to write a post about the news today, it dawned on me that I was gonna have to write about this show in the past tense. Aaaaaaand that's when the feelings happened.

My basic reaction.

Hannibal Lecter, and the Joy of Cooking with Friends

So, I've been pretty torn over what to post about Hannibal. Deep down, I just wanna post a close reading of the animal imagery running throughout the show, or gush over executive producer Bryan Fuller's ability to insert dramatic irony into every goddamn line. But, at the same time, I feel the need to talk about and lament the fact that no one watches this show. So, before I go any further, I want to put this as bluntly as I can: Hannibal is the best and the most innovative show on television. There isn't a close second.

Game of Thrones, and the Reinvention of Fantasy

I'm a fantasy nerd, at heart. I currently play D&D every other week, I read every crap fantasy novel I could get my hands on through middle and high school (I'm looking at you, Dragonlance), and I marathon the Lord of the Rings extended cut movies at least once a year. And while I can't name all the Valar at will (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuWSA4qyIDk), Middle Earth and all the worlds it's inspired hold a special place in my heart. I didn't know much about A Song of Ice and Fire before Game of Thrones was announced, but I remember being cautiously excited about fantasy getting an HBO show. Three and a half amazing seasons, several dozen deaths and about a bajillion illegal downloads later, all my caution has disappeared. Game of Thrones is one of the best, most compelling shows on television right now, but for me at least, it's something much more profound: it's the smartest thing to happen to fantasy since Tolkien invented the genre in 1954, and is for low fantasy what Lord of the Rings was for high fantasy.

This Thing I'm Doing

Hey internet,

So, I've been thinking about doing this for a while, and I've just decided to give it a shot now. I'm gonna start out by posting some of my thoughts on favorite shows on tv today, and then get into recaps I suppose once I've done that.

The shows I wanna start out looking at are, in descending order of bad-ass-ery, are:

Hannibal
Game of Thrones
Adventure Time
Arrow
Once Upon a Time

I might also post something about other shows or movies I wind up seeing, if I have any sufficiently strong feels about them.

So, yeah, stay posted.
